shifty savage

Hi all
I'm a new savage owner with a shifting problem, I think. I bought a 98 savage with 822 miles on it. I like the bike but it shifts hard into 5 th gear. The other 4 are ok up or down. Is some thing wrong or are all savage's this way? Thanks for any advice
